At Kind2Hearing your hearing and joy are of the utmost importance to us. Our qualified Audiologists follow a hands-on approach to support you through the entire process of improving the quality of your hearing. Our Audiologists all hold qualifications as set out by the regulations of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and are registered in the independent practice category. Upon visiting any of our Kind2Hearing practices across the country, one of our Audiologists will conduct a full diagnostic hearing test to provide you with the best solution to bring independence into your lifestyle.

STEP 1: CASE HISTORY

Your Audiologist will ask you several questions during the case history. This will aid our Audiologist in making the correct diagnosis, as well as recommendations with regards to your unique treatment.

STEP 2: OTOSCOPIC EXAMINATION

This is the first examination that will be conducted. Your audiologist will inspect your ears with an otoscope to assess whether or not your hearing problems may be related to external obstructions such as excessive ear wax. If the ear canal is clear of any obstruction, the audiologist will proceed with the next test. If not, our qualified audiologist will either remove the obstruction herself, or refer to an Ear- Nose and Throat specialist for further examination.

STEP 3: TYMPANOMETRY

This measurement is done to assess the functioning of the middle ear. Air pressure is introduced into the ear canal to assess eardrum movement. The middle ear volume and pressure is also evaluated. The results will indicated whether a middle ear pathology is present and if it needs to be treated by an Ear-Nose and Throat Specialist.

STEP 4: PURE TONE TESTING

This test is done to evaluate your hearing sensitivity to stimuli at various intensities (loudness levels) and frequencies (low and high sounds). The audiologist will place headphones over your ears and you will be asked to press the response button given to you, as soon as you hear the sound. An audiogram is compiled from the results, from which the presence and degree of a hearing loss can be established.

STEP 5: SPEECH AUDIOMERTY

Your audiologist will read out several words to you at different loudness levels, and ask you to repeat the words back. This test assesses the brain’s ability to process speech sounds and to discriminate between what is said. This will determine the softest loudness level where you can correctly identify words.

STEP 6: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS

Based upon above mentioned test results, your audiologist will determine the type and degree of hearing loss. Should your hearing loss be temporary, you will be referred to an Ear- Nose and Throat Specialist for further evaluation and treatment. Should you have a permanent hearing loss, we will discuss the prospect of obtaining help through the use of hearing aid devices and/or assistive listening devices. Factoring in your hearing loss, needs, lifestyle and finances, we will recommend options for appropriate types and styles of hearing aid devices that are available and best-suited for your needs.
